How To Install A Drain Pipe For A Sump Pump

The water that collects in the sink pit in the basement of your home is pumped by a sump pump. These pumps are designed to move water from a low point in your home to the outside through a drain pipe. This can be done either by running the water through the existing drainage system in your home or by simply running a drain to your yard.

Instructions
  1. Drill a 3-inch hole in the wall of your foundation with a chisel and a hammer. The hole should be located approximately 10 inches above the ground outside your home.
  2. Install a 1-inch diameter pipe - approximately 4 feet long - in the hole you made. Approximately 1-1 / 2 inches of the pipe should be glued out from the bottom floor or the outer sides of the wall.
  3. Mix up a bucket full of cement to the consistency of the peanut butter and apply it around the pipe with a trowel. Make sure the cement is tight around the pipe so it does not move back and forth.
  4. Connect a plastic drain tube to the tube that is inserted into the foundation wall. This tube should be a little larger than the pipe you have installed on the wall. Connect the pipes with a plastic connector. Clean pipe compound around the outside of the pipe and inside the plastic connector to create an airtight seal.
  5. Dig a ditch away from the foundation outside your home with a shovel. The trench should be approximately 6 inches deep and slope the foundations - about 1 inch per foot.
  6. Connect the plastic tube inside the basement to the sump pump with a straight connector, a 45 degree elbow and a check valve. Note that the check valve must be installed in a horizontal line of operation to keep the water from the rear flow in the sump pump.
  7. Connect the main manifold inside your house to a sleeve connector that slides over the pipe that connects to the sump pump.
Tips And Warnings
  • Support long pieces of the pipe by connecting to the roof beam with any of the cables or pipe supports.
  • The check valve must be installed in a horizontal line of operation to keep the water from the rear flow in the sump pump.
  • Do not direct the discharge of the sump in the sewer line. Most plumbing codes do not allow this.
